Today, some information about the different kind of stays you can find…
Half and half
The children are usually hosted by a family. Classes do happen in the morning, and activities in the afternoon. These stays are from 2 weeks to 1 month. The weakness is that the children do really practice the language with the hosting family only on evenings and weekends..but they do learn a lot about social life during the day…
School stay
The program is the same than above, classes in the morning, sports, cultural or artistic activities in the afternoon, but the children stay in kind of boarding schools, sometimes with other children from other countries. This is a good solution for a first stay abroad, especially if the child is young, because he will never be alone, as in a family.
Immersion
This way, the child go stay with a family to live its daily life. It is a really enriching solution, especially for extraverted kids, 14 or above. Just check that there is a child same age than yours.
Exchange
From far away the best way when it succeeds, because it can be carried on during many years, even with the younger siblings. Is the cheapest one too, but you have to be ready to entertain the young foreigner when he is going to stay with you.A good way for shy kids, who however do make friends easily. How long should I send him ?Anyway : never force your child to go. You can discuss with him, expose your arguments, but let him make up his mind and take the decision.
- 2 weeks
It is the best length for kids 13 and 14 years old, who still need to feel a little protection.
This is the best length too, for 1st time stay. It will be enough to get used to the language, to share and respect different ways of leaving and different values, and to enjoy being abroad.
- 1 month.
For the kids 14 and above who already went abroad, and for 15 and 16 years old who will get more from such a long stay.
After a short period, they will feel allright and start to progress in the foreign language, learn more vocabulary and try to express themselves.
It is long enough too, to make good friends, and maybe make some plans to come back the following year.
- The full summer
This is really for mature teenagers, ready to get the most out of their stay. The goal is not to learn more vocabulary, but to really be ready to speak the foreign lanaguage at a good level.
It is also a first step to look for living one year abroad.
Some books and movies on the subject….for the children to see what they can expect…sometimes on a specific side :
